Our Philosophy
Bridging theory and the shift
I remember how overwhelming it can feel to begin a career in the NICU. There's so much to learn, and it's easy to become focused on memorizing protocols without fully understanding the "why" behind the care we provide to our tiny patients.
My goal is to help bridge that gap by breaking down complex neonatal concepts into practical, evidence-based lessons that make sense both in the classroom and at the bedside. I want to help new graduate nurses build a strong foundation, develop confidence in their clinical decision-making, and understand the physiology that drives the interventions we use every day.
This is also for nurses preparing for their specialty certification, including the RNC-NIC and CCRN exams. Rather than simply reviewing facts to memorize, we'll focus on understanding the underlying concepts so you can apply your knowledge to patient care and approach certification with confidence.
Whether you're just beginning your NICU career, expanding your neonatal knowledge, or working toward your next certification, I hope this becomes a trusted resource that supports your growth as a nurse.
Why "NICU Compass"?
A compass doesn't take the journey for you—but it helps you find your direction when the path feels uncertain.
That's exactly what I hope this community becomes.
My hope is that NICU Compass serves as a guide, helping new nurses find direction, build confidence, and develop the understanding they need to thrive in the NICU.
No matter where you are in your neonatal nursing journey, I hope NICU Compass helps you navigate it with greater confidence, clarity, and purpose.
Meet the Founder
Hi, I'm Ashley, founder of NICU Compass.
For the past 10 years, I've had the privilege of caring for the tiniest and most vulnerable patients as a NICU nurse. I chose neonatal nursing because I was inspired by the incredible resilience of premature and critically ill babies. Watching these tiny patients accomplish what once seemed impossible is something that continues to amaze me every day.
For five of those years, I worked as a travel NICU nurse, caring for infants in eight NICUs across the country, primarily in Level IV units. Each hospital had its own protocols, culture, and ways of teaching, but one thing remained the same: every new NICU nurse wanted to provide the very best care, yet many quietly questioned whether they were "good enough."
I understood exactly how they felt because I had been there myself.
I still remember being the terrified new graduate nurse, afraid of making a mistake when caring for such tiny lives. I remember wondering if my questions would make me seem inexperienced or incompetent. Those feelings are far more common than many nurses realize, and they shouldn't stand in the way of learning.
One of my greatest passions has always been teaching new NICU nurses. I love explaining not only what we're doing, but why we're doing it. Watching a new graduate grow into a confident, knowledgeable NICU nurse is one of the most rewarding parts of my career.
Over the years, countless conversations with nurses convinced me that there was a need for something more. Many nurses told me they were struggling to fully understand certain concepts after orientation but were hesitant to ask for help because they feared being judged. Others shared how difficult it was to find quality resources while preparing for specialty certification exams.
When I was studying for my NICU certification, I searched for resources that would truly prepare me with confidence. While there were helpful materials available, I never found one comprehensive resource that explained complex neonatal concepts in a clear, practical, and approachable way.
That's why I created NICU Compass.
I believe every nurse deserves to understand the "why" behind what they're doing. When you truly understand the physiology, the reasoning, and the science behind your decisions, confidence naturally follows. Learning shouldn't feel overwhelming or intimidating—it should feel empowering.
Because confident nurses provide better care.
And every baby deserves that.
Thank you for being here.
I'm honored to be a small part of your NICU journey.
Warmly,
Ashley, BSN, RN, CCRN, RNC-NIC
